The BOINC Project

BOINC is an acronym for the Berkley Open Infrastructure Network Computing Project. What BOINC allows you to do is put your computer to work, when you aren't using it. This way, your computer actually contributes it's spare processing power to a research project of your choosing. For a more detailed description of it, read the BOINC Wiki, or visit the actual BOINC Website.

I participated in the Climate Prediction Data Network for awhile, but became disillusioned with them, as a project. I'm all for climate modeling, but not when the researchers are starting with a presupposition I don't agree with. They are running models (and so are you, if you participate) to show the effects of global warming, which presumes it is happening at all. Originally, the intent was to run models to see whether global warming was in fact occuring, but apparently, there's more funding and glamour the other way.

So, I ditched CPDN, and have moved my support to the Artificial Intelligence Project, where the goal is to reverse engineer the human brain, in order to build a large scale artificial intelligence system. Granted, the end result might be something like "Skynet" from the Terminator movies, or it might be something benign. Either way, it ought to be (eventually) interesting. There are many, many projects out there, if you visit the BOINC site, so finding something which interests you shouldn't be difficult.

If you're interested, I have a BOINC team, called "Team Sunstorm", which you're welcome to join. My Overall BOINC stats look like this:

Yes, my handle in BOINC is Nick Storm. So sue me.

      That's it for now...
